Spit Up
We have a spit up problem. Everything I read says spit up is not a medical problem, but a laundry problem. That is good news. However, this is a mess. A few times a day she will spit up almost everything she ate. We have contacted the doctor and they said that she is probably eating too much. We are now trying to cut back on her intake, but when we do she does not seem satisfied and I feel sad for her. We are also experimenting with different positions after she eats. Also, we have noticed burping her seems to make it worse. Did anyone else deal with this...when does it pass, did anything work?

Both of my boys have had reflux, which means tons of spit up. When Nathan was little I was convinced that he was spitting up everything he ate and my doctor assured me that it was really a lot less than it looked like. When Preston was first born one day I had an open cup in front of him and caught it, and it was actually only an ounce. It made me so sad, but it will get better and before you know it, she'll be over it. Keep your chin up!
Hey Allison,
I dealt with it also because Caleb had reflux. I would bet most babies have it, but some need meds for it. Unfortunately that was Caleb. You may want to start journaling when Caroline eats, spits up, burps, if it seems painful, any arching of the back?,etc. Sometimes it's hard for the doctors to understand the extremity of it. It took about a month for my doctor to really believe it was more than just spitting up or being too full. (Not that he was wrong, but I know they just try to wait things out).
Practical advice: Cover you and baby in towel before feeding. Leave baby sitting up for about 30 minutes after a feeding. A carseat is good for this... or even a papason chair! :)
kynli is having some spit up problems too. with kynli, i seem to notice that she spits up so much more when i feed her rather than when i feed her out of a bottle. so over the past few days i have been pumping a lot more and giving her almost every feeding out of the dr. browns bottles and it really seems to help. now when she spits up it is hardly anything at all, although she has had a couple of episodes of spitting up quite a bit. i dont know what it is when i feed her but the spit up just seems to be so much worse. it has been kind of hard to not do the breastfeeding (mainly because i love that time with her) but i can tell it helps her so that is what we are doing for now. we may put her on meds in the next week or two but i really want to try and avoid that if at all possible. we are also trying to keep her upright for atleast 20-30 minutes after she eats, and that seems to help some too!
Spit up is gross. Kelly still spits up sometimes and it's like a friggin geyser. I know they say to keep baby upright, but we feed him reclined, so when we have the time, we leave him that way for a while before sitting him up or burping him. That usually helps. It's just a nasty little fact of life, and I totally agree with your first commenter that it's probably a lot less than you think. I know you can try to add a little rice which is supposed to help keep it down. Good luck!!! Let us know what works!!
hi allison,
u dont know me but i am a friend of a friend!
anyways my baby had a big spit up problem too. the doc said it was reflux but it never seemed to actually hurt her so i never thought it was reflux. and all the meds we tried for it never worked. it was something she had to just grow out of. i hope if yours gets on meds it will help! otherwise, i feel for your washing machine :)
